Women empowerment is the process of increasing the social, economic, political and legal strength of women. It involves providing women with the right to make choices that affect their own lives and the lives of their families. Empowering women means ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, employment and participation in decision-making processes. Women constitute nearly half the population of the world and yet they have historically been denied equal rights and opportunities. In many parts of the world, women still face discrimination, violence and unequal treatment. Child marriage, female foeticide and domestic violence continue to be serious problems. In India, various laws have been enacted to protect women's rights. The Dowry Prohibition Act, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act are some important legislations. The Government has also launched several schemes to promote women's education and economic independence. Schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana aim to improve the status of the girl child. Women have made tremendous contributions in all fields including science, politics, sports, arts and business. When women are empowered, families are stronger, communities are more resilient and nations develop faster. Gender equality is not just a women's issue but a human rights issue that affects everyone.
