SSC CGL Typing Test (DEST) – Complete Guide to Qualify
SSC CGL conducts a qualifying typing test called the Data Entry Skill Test (DEST). This typing test is for those students who want to become a Tax Assistant (CBDT/CBIC) or Assistant Section Officer in CSS. In this typing test, students need to type 2000 key depressions (key presses) in 15 minutes on a computer.
You don't need to worry if this sounds confusing! This guide will help you to understand everything step by step in simple words. Even if you don't know how to type faster using all ten fingers and are learning typing for the first time, we will guide you through everything, and we will help you pass this typing test.
What is This SSC CGL Typing Test (DEST)?
DEST stands for Data Entry Skill Test. It is a typing test to check how fast you can type correctly on a computer system using a keyboard.
In this typing test, you will be provided a passage (some sentences) on a computer system. You have to type the passage completely in the given time (15 minutes). The provided computer will check your typing speed and all the mistakes you made.
What Happens at the SSC Typing Test Exam Center?
You may feel nervous about the exam center. Here is what will happen at the exam center, step by step:
- After your Tier-II exam, this typing test happens on the same day. You have to reach the exam center before 30 minutes before the exam time.
- Exam Staff will check and verify your admit card and ID proof at the entry gate.
- The typing test happens after 2 hours of your Tier-II exam. You will be provided with a computer system.
- SSC software will already be open on the computer. Before the final typing test, you will be able to give a 10-minute practice typing test.
- If any keys are not working in your keyboard, you can change them by asking the exam invigilator.
- After the practice typing test, there will be a break of about 3-5 minutes. After that, the final typing test will begin. A passage will appear on your screen - you have to type it in the given 15 minutes as shown.
- You will have 15 minutes to type 2000 key depressions (370-400 words) and complete this typing test.
- To correct your mistakes, you can use backspace.
- The test will be automatically submitted after the time ends.
Important: If you make any mistakes in the typing test, do not panic. Focus on rebuilding your typing rhythm. Always just keep typing and focus on improving your accuracy over speed.

How Much Accuracy is Needed to Pass?
To pass the SSC CGL typing test, you need to type the given paragraph with given 15 minutes with good accuracy. But there are some errors allowed. As per the category, here is the detailed breakdown:
General Category (UR)
- • Required Speed: 35 WPM
- • Official Error Limit: Up to 20% mistakes allowed
- • Recommended Safe Accuracy: 95%+ (5% errors)
OBC / EWS Category
- • Required Speed: 33 WPM
- • Official Error Limit: Up to 25% mistakes allowed
- • Recommended Safe Accuracy: 93–95% (5–7% errors)
SC / ST Category
- • Required Speed: 30 WPM

- • Recommended Safe Accuracy: 90–93% (7–10% errors)
Important: SSC calculates mistakes as full mistakes (1 mark) and half mistakes (0.5 mark). Though the official error limit is about (20–30%), we recommend keeping errors within 5–10% to stay on the safer side. Always aim to score 95%+ accuracy in practice.
What Mistakes Are Counted in the SSC Typing Test?
SSC has some official rules about mistakes. As per the SSC DEST Evaluation Document, there are two types of mistakes you need to remember:
Big Mistakes (1 full mark deducted for each):
- Missing a word or adding an extra word
- Typing the wrong word or number instead of the correct one
- Spelling mistakes or typing the same word twice
- Typing incomplete words (like typing 'typ' instead of 'type')
Small Mistakes (0.5 mark deducted for each):
- Wrong spacing between words or inside words
- Using capital letters where small letters should be used (or opposite)
- Missing commas, full stops, or other punctuation marks
- Typing words in the wrong order (like 'hope I' instead of 'I hope')
- Using spaces instead of the Tab key for starting a new paragraph
Example: If you typed "I hop you are fine" instead of "I hope you are fine", one word is wrong. This is 1 full mistake. Your score will be reduced.
How Your Speed and Accuracy Are Calculated
Don't worry about all the complex rules and maths! The SSC-NIC Typing Software calculates automatically. But in simple words, here is how it works:
Step 1: Count correct words
Software checks all the correct words you typed.
Step 2: Count wrong words
It tracks all your mistakes(big and small).
Step 3: Calculate speed
Speed (WPM) = Correct words ÷ Time in minutes
Example: If you typed 525 words correctly in 15 minutes, your WPM = 525 ÷ 15 = 35 WPM
Step 4: Calculate accuracy
Accuracy (%) = (Correct words ÷ Total words typed) × 100
Example: If you typed 550 words total and 525 were correct, Accuracy = (525 ÷ 550) × 100 = 95.45%
