Swachh Bharat Mission, or Clean India Mission, is one of the most important and ambitious programmes launched by the Government of India. It was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 October 2014, the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, at Rajghat, New Delhi. The mission aims to achieve a clean India by constructing household and community toilets and promoting the concept of sanitation throughout the country. Under the mission, millions of toilets have been built in rural and urban areas across the country. Hundreds of thousands of villages and many districts have been declared open defecation free. The mission has also focused on solid and liquid waste management in villages and towns. Schools and anganwadis have been provided with toilets to ensure that girls can attend school with dignity. The mission has brought about a significant change in the sanitation situation in the country. However, behavioural change remains a challenge. Building toilets alone is not enough; people must also be motivated to use them. The Government has launched awareness campaigns to educate people about the importance of sanitation and hygiene. Swachh Bharat has become a people's movement with participation from citizens, celebrities, corporate houses and civil society organisations. Maintaining cleanliness in public places, reducing plastic pollution and proper waste disposal are important aspects of the mission that need continued attention and effort from every Indian.
