Sports play an important role in the development of an individual and the nation. They promote physical fitness, mental strength and team spirit. Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in javelin throw, making history as India's first track and field Olympic gold medallist. The Government has been taking steps to promote sports in the country. The Khelo India programme aims to identify and develop sporting talent at the grassroots level. Sports facilities and infrastructure are being improved across the country. Financial support and scholarships are being provided to promising athletes. Sports science and technology are being used to improve training methods and performance. With continued investment and support, India has the potential to become a major sporting power in the world. Sports can also help to foster national unity and social harmony.
