The media is often referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy, alongside the legislature, executive and judiciary. A free and independent media is essential for the functioning of a healthy democracy. The media keeps citizens informed about events and issues that affect their lives. It holds those in power accountable by investigating and exposing corruption and wrongdoing. It provides a platform for diverse voices and opinions to be heard. It helps to educate the public and promote civic participation. Freedom of the press is guaranteed by the Constitution of India and is considered a fundamental right. India has a vibrant media landscape with thousands of newspapers, television channels, radio stations and online news portals in many languages. However, the media in India also faces several challenges. Concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few large corporations can undermine media independence. Commercial pressures can lead to sensationalism and the prioritisation of entertainment over informative journalism. The spread of fake news and misinformation through social media is a serious problem that can distort public perception and inflame social tensions. Journalists, particularly those working in remote areas or on sensitive topics, sometimes face threats to their safety. Media literacy is important to help citizens distinguish between reliable information and misinformation. Responsible journalism requires adherence to ethical standards of accuracy, fairness, impartiality and sensitivity to the rights of individuals.
