Madras High Court expressed doubts over the circumstances surrounding the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and issued notices to various government bodies seeking explanations. The court was clearly not satisfied with the secrecy maintained by people around Jayalalithaa, who was declared to have died on December 5 after 75 days of hospitalisation. A vacation bench of the court remarked that it too had doubts about the matter. Jayalalithaa was buried at the MGR memorial on the Marina Beach in Chennai on December 6. Her death triggered widespread grief across Tamil Nadu and among her supporters throughout the country. Jayalalithaa had been admitted to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai in September with fever and dehydration. Her health condition was a closely guarded secret throughout her hospitalisation. Only a few party leaders were given access to her and information about her health status was released sporadically. The secrecy around her treatment and death led to widespread speculation and rumours. Several petitions were filed in courts seeking investigation into the circumstances of her death. Her party, the AIADMK, continued to function under new leadership, though it faced internal challenges in the years that followed. Jayalalithaa remains a towering figure in Tamil Nadu politics and her contributions to the state are remembered by millions of her followers even today.
