The Indian Space Research Organisation, commonly known as ISRO, is the national space agency of India. It is headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. ISRO is one of the leading space agencies in the world and has achieved many significant milestones. It was established in 1969 under the leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is regarded as the father of the Indian space programme. ISRO's primary objective is the development and application of space technology for the socioeconomic benefit of the nation. ISRO has developed and launched a series of satellites for communication, Earth observation, navigation and scientific research. The INSAT series of satellites has greatly improved communication, weather forecasting and disaster management in India. The IRS series of satellites provides valuable data for resource management and environmental monitoring. The NavIC navigation system, India's own version of GPS, provides positioning services across the country and surrounding regions. ISRO's launch vehicles, the PSLV and GSLV, have successfully launched hundreds of satellites for India and other countries. India's Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, made India the first country in the world to successfully orbit Mars in its very first attempt. The Chandrayaan missions have contributed to lunar science and the Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the Moon's south pole. ISRO has achieved all these milestones at a fraction of the cost of comparable missions by other space agencies, making India's space programme one of the most cost-effective in the world.
