Digital India is a flagship programme of the Government of India with a vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 July 2015. It is centred on three key vision areas: digital infrastructure as a core utility to every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens. Under the programme, thousands of villages across India have been connected with broadband internet. Common Service Centres have been established to deliver government services to citizens in rural areas. Millions of bank accounts have been opened for people who were previously unbanked. Digital payments have grown rapidly following the demonetisation of high-value currency notes in November 2016. The Unified Payments Interface has made mobile payments simple and accessible. Today, India has one of the largest and fastest-growing digital payments ecosystems in the world. The Government has also digitised many of its services, making it easier for citizens to access them without having to visit government offices. Online platforms for filing income tax returns, applying for passports, obtaining driving licences and accessing land records have reduced corruption and saved time. Digital India has also created employment opportunities in the technology sector. India has become a global hub for information technology services and software development. The country is now well-positioned to lead the next wave of digital innovation.
