Corruption is one of the most serious problems facing India today. It permeates every aspect of public life and undermines the rule of law, democratic governance and economic development. Corruption manifests in many forms, including bribery, nepotism, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of power. It diverts resources meant for the poor and the needy into the pockets of corrupt officials and politicians. It increases the cost of doing business and discourages honest entrepreneurs. It erodes public trust in government institutions and weakens the social fabric. The Right to Information Act has been an important tool in the fight against corruption. It empowers citizens to seek information from government bodies and hold them accountable. The Central Vigilance Commission and the Lokpal are institutions established to investigate and address corruption in public life. The Government has also been using technology to reduce corruption by making government services available online, which reduces opportunities for corrupt officials to demand bribes. E-governance initiatives have brought greater transparency and efficiency to government functioning. The Direct Benefit Transfer scheme ensures that government subsidies and benefits reach the intended beneficiaries directly, bypassing intermediaries who might siphon off funds. Citizens must also play an active role in fighting corruption by refusing to pay bribes and reporting cases of corruption to the appropriate authorities. A corruption-free India is essential for achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
