Thewatercycle,alsoknownasthehydrologiccycle,isthecontinuous,dynamicmovementofwateron,above,andbelowthesurfaceoftheEarth.Itisaclosedsystem,meaningthatthetotalamountofwateronourplanethasremainedrelativelyconstantforbillionsofyears;itsimplychangesitsphysicalstatebetweenliquid,solidice,andinvisiblewatervapor.Thecycleisprimarilydrivenbythermalenergyradiatingfromthesun.Whensolarradiationheatsthesurfaceofoceans,lakes,andrivers,thewaterabsorbsthisenergyandevaporates,transformingfromaliquidintoagaseousvaporthatriseshighintotheatmosphere.Additionally,plantscontributesignificantlytothisupwardmoistureflowthroughabiologicalprocesscalledtranspiration,releasingwatervaporthroughtinyporesintheirgreenleaves.Asthewarm,moistairascendsintotheupperlevelsofthetroposphere,thetemperaturedropsrapidly.Thiscoolingcausestheinvisiblewatervaportocondensearoundmicroscopicparticlesofdustandsalt,formingvisibleclouds.Whenthesesuspendedwaterdropletsmergeandbecometooheavytoremainaloft,theyfallbackdowntotheEarth'ssurfaceasprecipitation,whichcantaketheformofrain,snow,sleet,orhail.Oncethewaterreturnstotheground,severaldifferentthingscanhappen.Itmayaccumulateinmassiveicecapsormountainglaciers,remainingfrozenforthousandsofyears.Alternatively,itcanflowoverthelandscapeassurfacerunoff,carvingdeeprivervalleysandeventuallyemptyingbackintothevastoceans.Asignificantportionofprecipitationinfiltratesthesoil,seepingdeepundergroundtoreplenishporousrockaquifers,becomingvitalgroundwater.Thisgroundwaterslowlymovesbeneaththesurfaceoverdecadesorcenturies,sometimesre-emergingasnaturalfreshwatersprings.Thewatercycleisaprofoundandessentialmechanismthatpurifiestheglobalwatersupply,sustainsdiverseterrestrialandaquaticecosystems,andregulatesglobalweatherpatternsandclimatesystems.
