TheconstructionofthePanamaCanalstandsasoneofthemostaudacious,expensive,anddeadlyengineeringmegaprojectseverundertakeninthehistoryofhumancivilization.Priortoitscompletion,shipstravelingbetweentheAtlanticandPacificOceanswereforcedtoendurethetreacherous,lengthyjourneyaroundthefreezing,stormysoutherntipofSouthAmerica,knownasCapeHorn.TheideaofcarvingamassivewaterwaydirectlythroughthenarrowIsthmusofPanamahadbeendiscussedforcenturies,buttheFrenchwerethefirsttoattemptitinthelatenineteenthcentury.However,theireffortendedincompletecatastrophicfailure,bankruptingthecompanyandresultinginthetragicdeathsofovertwentythousandworkers,primarilyduetovirulentoutbreaksoftropicaldiseaseslikeyellowfeverandmalaria.Intheearlytwentiethcentury,theUnitedStatestookoverthecolossalprojectundertheaggressiveleadershipofPresidentTheodoreRoosevelt.Crucially,theAmericanengineersrealizedthatattemptingtodigasea-levelcanalthroughtheruggedmountainousterrainwasimpossible.Instead,theydesignedahighlycomplexsysteminvolvingamassiveartificiallakeandaseriesofcolossal,gravity-poweredwaterlocks.TocreateGatunLake,theyconstructedthelargestearthendamintheworldatthetime,successfullyholdingbackthemightyChagresRiver.Thelocksthemselvesaremarvelsofmechanicalengineering.Whenashipenterstheconcretechamber,massive,hollowsteelgatessealshutbehindit.Wateristhenfedentirelybygravityfromtheartificiallakethroughmassiveculvertsintothelock,slowlyraisingtheenormousvesselovereighty-fivefeetabovesealevel.Oncetheshiptraversesthecontinentaldivide,amatchingsetoflockssafelylowersitbackdowntotheoppositeocean.Tofacilitatethis,workershadtoexcavatemillionsoftonsofearthandsolidrockfromthetreacherousCulebraCut,constantlybattlingmassive,deadlymudslidesthatwipedoutmonthsofgruelingprogressinmereseconds.Themedicalvictorywasjustassignificantastheengineeringone;byaggressivelyeradicatingmosquitobreedinggrounds,Americandoctorsdrasticallyreducedthemortalityratefromtropicaldiseases.Thecanalofficiallyopenedtoglobalmaritimetrafficinnineteenfourteen,permanentlyalteringglobaltraderoutesanddramaticallyreducingshippingtimesandcostsacrosstheentireplanet.
