ThecarboncycleisafundamentalbiogeochemicalprocessthatregulatestheEarth'sclimateandsustainsallknownbiologicallifebycontinuouslycirculatingcarbonatomsthroughtheatmosphere,biosphere,oceans,andgeosphere.Carbon,anincrediblyversatileelement,formstheabsolutestructuralfoundationofallorganicmolecules,fromthesimplesugarsthatprovideourenergytothecomplexdouble-helixofourDNA.Intheatmosphere,carbonexistsprimarilyascarbondioxide,apotentgreenhousegasthattrapssolarradiationandkeepstheplanetwarmenoughtosupportliquidwater.Thecycleisprimarilydrivenbytheincredibleprocessofphotosynthesis.Plants,algae,andcertaintypesofbacteriaabsorbatmosphericcarbondioxideandutilizetheradiantenergyfromthesuntoconvertitintoglucose,arichorganiccompound,releasingvitaloxygenasabyproduct.Thiscarbonisthentransferredthroughthefoodwebasherbivoresconsumetheplants,andcarnivoressubsequentlyconsumetheherbivores.However,carbondoesnotremainlockedwithinthesebiologicalorganismspermanently.Throughtheprocessofcellularrespiration,bothplantsandanimalsbreakdowntheseorganicmoleculestogenerateenergy,releasingcarbondioxidebackintotheatmosphereinacontinuous,elegantloop.Furthermore,whenorganismsdie,theirbodiesarebrokendownbydecomposerslikefungiandbacteria,whichalsoreleasecarbondioxideduringthedecayingprocess.Overmillionsofyears,vastamountsofdeadorganicmattercanbecomeburieddeepundergroundunderimmensegeologicalpressure,eventuallytransformingintodensefossilfuelssuchascoal,oil,andnaturalgas.Thesesubterraneanreservoirsactasmassive,long-termcarbonsinks.Theworld'soceansalsoplayacriticalrole,absorbingroughlyone-quarterofallcarbondioxidereleasedintotheatmosphere.Thedissolvedgasreactswithseawatertoformcarbonicacid,whichmarineorganismsutilizetobuildtheirhardcalciumcarbonateshellsandelaboratecoralskeletons.Unfortunately,humanindustrialactivities,primarilytheaggressiveextractionandcombustionoffossilfuels,haveseverelydisruptedthisdelicatenaturalbalance.Byrapidlyreleasingmillionsofyears'worthofstoredcarbonbackintotheatmosphereinjustafewshortcenturies,wehaveartificiallyacceleratedthegreenhouseeffect,leadingtodangerousglobalclimatechange,rapidlymeltingpolaricecaps,andthesevereacidificationofourglobaloceans.
