How Glaciers Shape the Land

Glaciersaremassive,incrediblypowerfulriversofdenseicethathaveprofoundlyshapedthephysicalgeographyofourplanetovermillionsofyearsofgeologicalhistory.Unliketypicalseasonalseaiceorwintersnowpack,atrueglacierisapermanentbodyoficethatisconstantlymovingundertheimmensepressureofitsownstaggeringweight.Theyforminextreme,high-altitudealpineregionsornearthefreezingpolarcaps,wheretheannualaccumulationofwintersnowvastlyexceedstheamountthatmeltsduringthebriefsummermonths.Asdecadesandcenturiespass,thedelicate,fluffysnowflakesareprogressivelyburieddeeperanddeeper.Themassiveweightoftheoverlyingsnowforcefullycompressesthelowerlayers,squeezingoutthetrappedairpocketsandtransformingthesnowintoadense,granulariceknownasfirn.Withfurthercompressionoverthousandsofyears,thisfirnrecrystallizesintosolid,crystallineglacialice,whichoftentakesonastunning,vibrantbluecolorbecauseitabsorbstheredspectrumoflight.Oncetheicemassbecomesthickenough—typicallyaroundfiftymetersdeep—theimmensepressurecausestheiceattheverybottomtobehavelikeahighlyviscous,slow-movingplastic.Theglacierbeginstoslowlyslidedownhill,drivenentirelybytherelentlessforceofgravity.Astheglacierrelentlesslyadvances,itactslikeacolossalpieceofsandpaper,aggressivelygrindingandgougingthebedrockbeneathit.Rocks,massiveboulders,andfinegravelbecomesecurelyfrozenintothebaseofthemovingice,transformingtheglacierintoadevastatingerosionaltool.Thisprocess,knownaspluckingandabrasion,carvesdeep,distinctiveU-shapedvalleysthroughsolidmountainranges,drasticallyalteringthelandscape.Whenaglaciereventuallyretreatsduetowarmingglobaltemperatures,itleavesbehindaradicallychangedenvironment.Itdepositsmassive,chaoticridgesofcrushedrockandunsorteddebrisknownasterminalmoraines,whichmarkthefurthestpointoftheglacier'shistoricadvance.Furthermore,giantblocksoficeoftenbreakoffandbecomeburiedinthesediment.Whentheseburiediceblocksfinallymeltcenturieslater,theyleavebehinddeep,steep-sideddepressionscalledkettlelakes.ThebreathtakingfjordsofNorway,thethousandsofsparklinglakesscatteredacrossCanada,andthejagged,toweringpeaksoftheSwissAlpsareallmagnificenttestamentstothestaggering,transformativepowerofglacialerosionduringthelastmajorIceAge.
