What Does Touch Typing Mean?

Touch typing means, you type without looking at your keyboard.

You use all your ten fingers, and each fingers are responsible for group of keys. In touch typing we maintain a finger postion over the middle row ( asdfghjkl;), after clicking any key our finger returns back. This middle row called home row.

After practicing how to press a different key with a different finger our brain develops some muscle memory, and it helps us to type faster without looking at the keyboard.

Begining of Touch Typing: The Home Row

The home row is the middle row of a regular QWERTY keyboard, containing letters like a,s,d,f,g,h,j,k,l and ;.

Here’s where our all the 8 fingers rest. To place your finger properly there is a trick. Please look at your keyboard and find out F and J. You can see there are two raised bumps over those keys. Now simple fill them by touching with your both hand index fingers. Place your left hand index finger on F and right hand index finger on J. Great, Now place rest of your finger side by side to rest of the keys. Congratulations! this is our default hand positioning for touch typing.

For better positioning here is the list:

Left Hand

Pinky → A

Ring → S

Middle → D

Index → F

Right Hand

Index → J

Middle → K

Ring → L

Pinky → ; (semicolon)
